You're a Carrie!
"The org runs on vibes, one loyal donor, and your own two hands. And somehow, it's working. For now."
Your newsletter is the best writing in three counties and everyone knows it. Three of your programs started as one conversation at the post office. Your budget is held together by vibes, one loyal donor, and a spreadsheet you're scared to open. You once covered the community dinner ham out of your own pocket and told no one. And when a hard decision needs making, you don't make it. You write something beautiful in its general direction.
Your strength: Story. Nobody makes people feel this mission like you do. Volunteers show up because of how you talk about the work. Donors remember you. The paper quotes you. Whole programs exist because you described them out loud and people believed you. That's real power, and most orgs would kill for it.
Here's what's going on: Where things go sideways is when an organization runs on one person's instincts instead of a structure that can hold them. Programs, money, priorities: everything arrives by inspiration, so everything leaves the same way. Inspiration works right up until the season it doesn't. Your work deserves an operation as reliable as your writing. That's a systems question, and systems aren't a betrayal of scrappiness. They're what let the scrappiness take a power nap.
Do this in the next 24 hours: Get it all out of your head and onto paper. Every program, commitment, and half-promise the organization is currently carrying. One list. Then circle the three that actually move the mission. You don't have to cut anything today. You just have to see it.
