The Way We Work: Boundaries
A gathering for anyone working in & around the nonprofit sector
✨
✨
October 23, 5–7 pm
Sparkle on the Rocks, Wallingford, VT
Why The Way We Work?
In the mission-driven world, it can be hard to find real opportunities for open, human-to-human conversations across organizations.
Even at conferences or networking events, we don’t usually get the chance to turn to someone new and say something like, “Hey, I’m having trouble setting a boundary. Will you tell me about one that’s important to you and how you got to that decision?”
I love many professional development events. But this event is meant to feel different: more conversational, more spacious, more human.
I’m endlessly curious about the minutiae of people’s day-to-day lives. What feels heavy right now? What’s bringing you joy? What do you wish more people knew about the work you do?
Too often, the non-profit sector runs on scarcity — of time, money, and emotional bandwidth. We don’t always get the space to slow down, to celebrate, or to reflect. The Way We Work is meant to be that pause: a place for listening, learning, and remembering we’re not in this alone.
Why Boundaries?
In the nonprofit and mission-driven world, it can feel like we’re always stretching ourselves to meet the next need. Boundaries help us create space for what matters most — in our work and in our lives.
This first The Way We Work gathering will focus on boundaries: what they look like, how we practice them, and how they can make our work more sustainable. We’ll learn from each other’s experiences and leave with ideas we can carry forward.
What to Expect
The evening will center on three things:
Conversation: guided sharing and reflection on boundaries
Creativity: an (actually) fun group activity to loosen up and connect in new ways
Connection — time for smaller breakout conversations in Sparkle’s cozy rooms, with snacks and drinks.
This isn’t about walking away with a perfect system or optimization strategy. It’s about honest conversation, shared wisdom, and small, real shifts you can carry forward.
My hope is that you’ll leave with fresh insight, a sense of ease, and new connections.
About me
I’m Abbey Harlow, a nonprofit consultant. I’ve spent nearly two decades working with small nonprofits across New England, and one thing I’ve learned is this: we need more spaces to pause, reflect, and learn from each other as people.
Like many of you, I’m juggling a lot: two young kids, a fully self-employed household, many hobbies and passions, and a job without clear start and stop times. I care deeply about this work, and I also know what it feels like to be stretched thin. That’s why I’m creating spaces like this - because we all deserve a way of working that feels more human.
The Way We Work is my way of creating those spaces — gatherings that mix learning, conversation, and fun.

Why Here
We’ll gather at Sparkle on the Rocks, a whimsical, light-filled space that practically glows (and yes, sparkles!) with creativity. It’s the perfect backdrop for exploring how we want to work, and live, with more intention.
